High level view of proposed entrance to Southern
ticket hallMott MacDonald has been appointed by London
Underground to be the lead consultant for the detailed design
through to construction of Victoria Station Upgrade (VSU) . The
upgrade is a complex multi-disciplinary project initiating major
developments of the existing Victoria Underground Station as part
of Transport for London’s £10 billion Investment Programme. The
project will focus on improvements to the station areas of the
Victoria Line including extensive modernisation of the existing
station infrastructure.
Identified as a key site requiring congestion relief, the
redevelopment will increase the size of Victoria Station by about
50% with a new ticket hall, lifts and escalators to ease congestion
and provide step-free access from street level to Victoria, Circle
and District line platforms.
Proposed new Northern ticket hallThe
implementation of the scheme has been devised to facilitate greater
efficiency of service and safety for passengers and to accommodate
the growth of the Capital. The project is due to start in 2009 for
completion in 2016 and will cost over £500 million.
The project area already has a highly developed and congested
infrastructure both above and below ground and the VSU scheme will
introduce additional tunnels and shaft into this congested area.
Mott MacDonald are providing Multi-Disciplinary Consultancy
Services (MDC2). The other team members include Weston Williamson
(Architect), London Bridge Associates (Construction Planners) and
MVA (Passenger Modellers).
Project Highlights:
Scheme proposalCuts in peak time
congestion and improved capacity. A new north ticket hall and
entrance will allow passengers to enter the station without having
to cross the busy streets separating many offices from the existing
station entrance.
- Enlargement of existing Victoria line ticket hall
- Better access for all passengers. New lifts will provide
step-free access from street to Victoria Line platforms and
interchange with Circle & District lines platforms. There will
be nine new escalators. Wider stairs will improve ingress and
egress to the national rail station.
- A new tunnel connecting to the north end of the Victoria Line
platform will improve passenger flows.
