Sirte Port Development

Port development illustrationOblique view of the proposed port developmentMott MacDonald, together with Libyan consultants National Consulting Bureau, have been appointed by the People’s Committee of Sirt Municipality in Libya to plan and design an expansion to the port at Sirte, a town located about 460km east of Tripoli. The aim of the project is to provide the Sirte region with an international seaport in conjunction with the continuing development of the town as a major commercial city and regional centre.

Remote sensing has been used to aid master planningConsideration is being given to the development of container berths, liquid and dry bulk berths, roll-on roll-off berths, a passenger terminal, cruise terminal and ship repair facilities, all with associated port storage, infrastructure and buildings. The programme will also include an extension to the existing breakwater to provide ships with shelter from the severe storm waves experienced along this area of Mediterranean coastline.

Dredging on the shorePhase 1 dredging worksThe coastal issues of the development of this port are being examined. The change to the sedimentary regime and impacts on the marine environment are some of the concerns being addressed. We will assist in undertaking a review of the coastal geomorphology, evolution of the coastline and ground investigation, along with sampling of the sediment and benthos, in order to anticipate the ground conditions and sensitivity of the biota.

Mott MacDonald, working with National Consulting Bureau, will plan and design the expansion project including masterplanning, environmental impact assessment, preliminary and detailed design. Construction is expected to commence in 2010.
