Althorp Embankment

Deformed rail trackDeformation of track associated with failure mechanismMott MacDonald was appointed by Birse Rail to undertake a ground investigation and design remedial works to mitigate the risk associated with the vegetation and stabilise the embankment.

Ground investigation and inclinometer monitoring results indicated a progressive failure mechanism was occurring within the highly plastic Lias Clay embankment materials leading to track movement. The mechanisms were modelled in the finite element software PLAXIS to assess the factor of safety and associated improvements gained through implementation of remedial works.

Soil nailingSoil nail installation to stabilise embankmentRemedial works design was undertaken to Network Rail standards with the production of Form A Approval in Principle and Form B documentation.

Permanent works comprised an innovative double row of soil nailed gabions with earthworks fill to stabilise the progressive failure mechanism and provide additional cess support. Inclinometer monitoring was undertaken over a 12 month period to confirm movements had ceased.
