Cut and cover construction

Tunnel jacking pits, Boston Central ArteryThe design and construction of cut-and-cover structures embraces a full range of foundation engin-eering techniques we've carried out around the world. Our experience involves extensive work in difficult ground conditions including very soft alluvial deposits and over consolidated swelling clays.

In addition to metros, underground railways and roads, Mott MacDonald has designed numerous special structures to stringent defence standards. Measures to minimise traffic disruption during construction have been successfully incorporated into the design of numerous projects, especially in urban locations.

An understanding of soil/structure interaction is a major factor in achieving successful foundation engineering solutions. Our team have the skills and experience necessary for cut-and-cover construction.

Notable projects in the UK include the Channel Tunnel, cut-and-cover railway tunnels at Castle Hill, Holywell and the Terminal Loop at Folkestone, where significant programme and budget savings were made by eliminating movement joints and external membranes while still providing a watertight structure.

Some more of our key tunnel projects include:

  • Limehouse Link, UK
  • Boston Central Artery, USA
  • Heathrow Express, UK
  • Putrajaya Light Rail, Malaysia
