Site investigation

Heathrow Terminal 5 investigation BAA Heathrow T5 - investigation Adequate site investigation is of fundamental importance to all civil engineering works. It comprises desk study, site reconnaissance, design and supervision of investigations and interpretation of ground conditions for the proposed works.

Mott MacDonald manages around £3 million worth of ground investigations in the UK per year, ranging from very small building extensions to major projects. Many projects require an assessment of potentially contaminative previous uses. We manage a variety of investigations in support of our activities around the globe, three of our recent overseas include:

  • Site investigationChannel Tunnel Rail Link - investigationMelen, Turkey – $4 million investigation of 200km of pipeline including a crossing of the Bosphorus
  • Das Island, UAE – geomorphological mapping of unstable cliffs below a petrochemical works
  • N6 Eire – 3 million Euro investigation of 50km highway
The diversity of skills amongst our staff allows us to provide real insight into the likely behaviour of a wide range of ground and groundwater conditions, and to add value through our understanding of how these conditions will effect proposed works.
