We provide a comprehensive service using a carefully structured
risk management framework, from initial assessment and evaluation
through to risk reduction. Our specialists are qualified in a broad
range of disciplines including hydrogeology, chemistry, geology and
geotechnical engineering. Only through a multi-disciplinary
approach can risks be properly assessed and, if required,
remediation be effectively designed and procured.
A phased approach is adopted:
- pre-commission appraisal
- desk study, walkover survey, preliminary risk assessment
- intrusive ground investigation, qualitative risk assessment
through hazard, pathway, receptor analysis
If appropriate, subsequent phases would include: monitoring,
quantitative risk assessment, treatment trials, remediation design,
supervision and verification.
At each stage of a commission we can, if appropriate, utilise a
range of specialist skills:
- geological and hydrogeological databases
- hazard ranking for multiple sites
- event-tree analysis
- numerical modelling for groundwater flow and contaminant
transport
- geostatistical analysis of geological surfaces and contaminant
concentrations
- human health risk assessment
Contaminated land issues have been important in numerous projects.
The following selection of projects indicates the range of problems
we have successfully solved:
- Courtaulds access: contaminant solubility adjacent to sensitive
estuary, carbon disulphide gas migration.
- Pumpfield’s: Leaking tar pits, migration of BTEX and PAH
compounds, design of in-ground barriers and venting, quantitative
risk assessment (numerical modelling of potential groundwater and
human health impacts)
- Gower Street: TPH migration in groundwater, methane and carbon
dioxide migration in buildings, long term monitoring, quantitative
risk assessment
- Texaco, Trafford Park: Migration of free phase and dissolved
phase diesel contamination. Geostatistical analysis of oil plumes.
Groundwater monitoring and numerical modelling of dissolved phase
migration. RBCA Tier 2 risk assessment
- High Bay Warehouse, Oldham: Actively gassing landfill, design
of gas protection measures
- Dublin Water Treatment Works: Redevelopment of existing
landfill with wide range of contaminants, including asbestos,
methane, PAH etc. RBCA Tier 1 risk assessment
We are experienced in liaising with the Environment Agency, and
customs and excise during implementation of remediation, and for
landfill tax assessments etc. We can add value by integrating our
solutions into the overall site redevelopment to minimise
environmental impacts, commercial risks and costs and maximise
buildability and future redevelopment options.
